After leading FC St. Pauli to promotion to the Bundesliga, Fabian Hürzeler left his position as head coach of the club to sign for Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Hamburg club have now found his replacement: 51-year-old Alexander Blessin, who joins from Belgian cup winners and runners-up Union Saint-Gilloise.

"With Alexander Blessin we have found an internationally experienced coach for FC St. Pauli. He has a lot of tactical knowledge and has already worked in Belgium and Italy in the top division as well as internationally," said ST. Pauli sporting director Andreas Bornemann.

He added of the 51-year-old, who was formerly a youth coach at RB Leipzig:

"From his time in Leipzig, he also knows exactly how to introduce young players to the men's game. We are very pleased that he has decided to lead FC St. Pauli as head coach in the Bundesliga, despite the prospect of Champions League matches.
