In the battle of previously-winless World Cup teams, Egypt beat New Zealand to sit top of a tight Group G. Mohamed Salah was the star performer as he scored and assisted the last two goals in a 3-1 victory.
The ex-Liverpool superstar provided the assist in the 1-1 draw with Belgium, and he continued his excellent start to the tournament with more goal contributions. Hossam Hassan's side had to dig deep for the three points as New Zealand were in front at the break via Finn Surman's strike. The center-back converted the corner-kick by Tim Payne, who has more Instagram followers than the population of New Zealand.
Mostafa Ziko leveled the score with a powerful header before providing the assist to Salah's third World Cup goal, which made the winger his country's outright top-scorer in the competition’s history (3). Substitute Trézéguet sealed the win with a goal six minutes after his introduction.
Former Bundesliga striker Omar Marmoush played 75 minutes for Egypt. Sarpreet Singh, who counts FC Bayern as one of the four German clubs he played for, started for New Zealand before leaving the pitch at the same time.
Egypt are now top of Group G as they are the only side to win a game after two rounds. New Zealand will face underwhelming Belgium, while Egypt play against Iran simultaneously.
