VfL Bochum
Bochum’s resurgence under Uwe Rösler has been nothing short of remarkable since his appointment last October. The hosts have suffered just two defeats in his 18 league matches in charge, transforming them into one of the division’s most difficult sides to face. They head into the weekend sitting ninth, with a healthy seven-point cushion over the relegation play-off spot.
Their resilience was on full display last time out in Berlin. Despite being second best for long stretches and falling behind just before half-time, Bochum refused to wilt. Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time, when Leandro Morgalla struck in the 91st minute to snatch a valuable point.
Rösler is under no illusions about the challenge awaiting his side:
“It will be a high-intensity game. We're playing against one of the fastest and most agile teams in the league. We have to deliver our best performance of the second half of the season to win the game,”
Home form could once again prove decisive. Bochum are unbeaten in their last seven league outings at the Ruhrstadion, a run that has underpinned their climb away from danger.
Team news: Romario Rösch and Marcel Sobottka are sidelined, while there are doubts over the availability of Kevin Vogt and Francis Onyeka.
Holstein Kiel
The arrival of Tim Walter has yet to spark an immediate turnaround. Kiel are still searching for their first win under their new head coach, although there have been encouraging signs - most notably a credible draw against promotion-chasing Elversberg in his opening match.
The bigger picture, however, remains concerning. Kiel begin the weekend in 17th place, three points adrift of safety, and facing the very real prospect of back-to-back relegations if results do not improve quickly.
Their latest setback was a frustrating home defeat to 1. FC Nürnberg. Despite controlling large portions of the game - enjoying more possession, registering more shots on target, and generating a higher xG - they were ultimately undone, with Mohamed Ali Zoma netting the decisive goal in a 3-2 loss for Miroslav Klose’s side.
Encouragingly for Kiel, Walter remained upbeat post-match, describing the display as a “top performance” and insisting he is “even more optimistic than before” about their survival chances.
That optimism will need to translate into results on the road. Kiel have lost their last three away matches, a run they must halt urgently with the season entering a decisive phase.
Team news: Carl Johansson remains sidelined, while Alexander Bernhardsson, Andu Kelati, and John Tolkin are also ruled out through injury. David Zec (10th yellow card) and Stefan Schwab (5th yellow card) are suspended.
H-2-H record
The reverse fixture ended in a 1-1 draw at the Holstein-Stadion in October, with Louis Koster cancelling out Onyeka’s opener. Interestingly, each of the last three meetings between these sides has finished level. Kiel have not won away in Bochum since 2019, underlining the challenge they face this weekend.
