Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has been identified as Bayern Munich's top target for the summer transfer window, according to Sport Bild.

Having first made contact with Wirtz's family when he was just 13 years old, Bayern have now made a fresh approach, as per the report, which claims that the Bavarians have been signalled that they have a real chance of signing him.

Bayern's main rivals in the race for Wirtz's signature are believed to be Real Madrid, with one of the reasons being that Leverkusen would prefer to ship the 21-year-old abroad rather than sell him to a Bundesliga title rival. If Xabi Alonso leaves Leverkusen this summer to take over as Real Madrid coach, the Spanish giants would be in a particularly strong position.

Nevertheless, Bayern remain optimistic - partly because they've been working on the transfer for so long, but also because Wirtz's good friend from the German national team, Jamal Musiala, is expected to sign a new long-term contract with the club.

Bayern are aware that Wirtz would break the club's record transfer fee of €100 million, set when they signed Harry Kane from Tottenham last summer.

However, Bayern are in a healthy financial position and could make further funds available by selling players, with the club willing to listen to offers for Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry.

Wirtz's contract with Leverkusen runs until 2027.
