Heidenheim's Sessa moves to Hertha on a free

The transfer of 1. FC Heidenheim attacking midfielder Kevin Sessa to Hertha BSC was confirmed late yesterday evening.

Following a standout season and some reported interest from abroad, 23-year-old German attacking midfielder Kevin Sessa has opted to move to second division side Hertha BSC on a free transfer. Sessa made 30 top-flight league appearances for Heidenheim this season, netting three goals during an especially strong finish to the campaign.

The Fellbach-native scored a vital goal in Heidenheim's round 28 upset victory over Bayern. He also added goals on the last two match-days against Freiburg and Köln. Sessa - with Heidenheim since 2017 - has scored seven goals in 89 second division appearances. His new deal in Charlottenburg runs through 2027.

“We are very happy that we were able to convince Kevin of Hertha BSC and our mission,” Hertha sporting director Benjamin Weber noted in a statement published on the club's website “He has a very exciting and versatile profile. He has already gained plenty of experience despite his young age and has proven his qualities in both the first and second Bundesliga.”

“The club was the key point in my considerations," the player himself added, "notably how large it is and what a scoop it has. There's also the fans, the stadium and the city. I was immediately drawn to it.”

Sessa has both German and Argentine heritage, earning the nickname "Diego" from his teammates. Rumors continue to swirl that Hertha are close to signing another "Diego" in the former Leipzig professional Diego Demme.
