Hummels reacts to Euros snub: "I'm one of the five best defenders in Germany"

Mats Hummels has revealed how he was informed he would not be in Germany's squad for Euro 2024 and how he feels about the decision.

Mats Hummels has opened up about the talk he had with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann about not being included in the squad for Euro 2024.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Hummels revealed that their conversation didn't even last two minutes.

"I had to go to training. But I don't need a long conversation or a long explanation at times like this. That was enough for me," Hummels told Sport Bild.

According to Hummels, the decision wasn't based on concerns about whether or not he would accept a substitute role, but rather "age-related things like fitness".

Even if he's disappointed, the 35-year-old understands the decision, especially since he wasn't called up for the two friendlies in March.

“I can understand the idea that a group has been growing since March. It's bitter for me as an individual because I'm currently one of the five best defenders in Germany. I have the self-confidence to say that.

“If I'd had a phase like the one I had recently before the squad was announced in March, maybe I would have been called up - for the European Championship squad now as well.”
