Reports: Wolfsburg hope to extend with Schlager amid Dortmund links

Amid transfer rumors linking him with Borussia Dortmund, VfL Wolfsburg are currently attempting to extend the contract of Austrian midfielder Xaver Schlager.

Rumors linking VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Xaver Schlager as a potential replacement for Axel Witsel at Borussia Dortmund began cropping up earlier in the week. According to reports from the local Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany's green company team is currently stepping up efforts to sign the 24-year-old to a contract extension.

One of the prize acquisitions of the Oliver Glasner regime in Wolfsburg, Schlager has dealt with injury problems both in his first year with the German Wolves and the current campaign. The ÖFB international nevertheless still maintains an estimated market value of some €27 million. With a contract expiring in 2023, Schlager will surely be the subject of many transfer rumors over the next year.

The Wolfsburg local newspaper reports that Schlager does have an exit clause built into his current deal, meaning the VfL could pocket significant cash for him this summer. The highly effective manner in which the Schlage-Maximilian Arnold midfield duo functions will still leave the club keen to hang onto what they consider to be one of their most important pieces.

German footballing magazine Kicker reports that talks between Schlager and the club are scheduled to begin as soon as Wolfsburg officially secures first division football for next season. This could come as soon as this weekend, but may take until matchday 32.
