SC Freiburg's important summer ahead

By Jonathan Dicks   @Jonathan_Dicks

Christian Streich’s group have overperformed yet again as they’ve booked a trip to the Europa League. But does the quiet club in the Black Forest have enough depth to manage 3 competitions?
Christian Streich.
Christian Streich.
Even with the departure of Nico Schlotterbeck to BVB and Janik Haberer’s move to the capital, Freiburg still have enough talent to continue playing sensational football with a new tournament added to the calender. But club brass is already looking at reinforcements to prepare for an exciting campaign ahead.

Freiburg are thin in the middle of the park and this seems to be their main focus of the summer. Reports link the club with FC St. Pauli midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh who with his 13 goal, 11 assist season could be a bargain at just 26-years-old. While FC Nurnberg’s Lino Tempelmann may return from his loan, the club are also looking at Manchester City’s Ko Itakura. The former Schalke No. 6 would aid ageless Nicolas Hofler in some defensive midfield action.

Young Italian attacker Degnand Wilfried Gnonto from FC Zurich is also rumored to be in Freiburg’s sights, especially if Ermedin Demirovic is headed for the exit door to add much-needed depth. Freiburg are praying they can hold onto Mark Flekken and are aware of their need for a left-footed defender. Although, the arrival of Matthias Ginter on a free is stunning to say the least.

One of the greatest heists in recent memory.

Sporting CEO Jochen Saier & co. are extremely savvy with their decisions in these windows. It’s all about buying low and investing in the future. So while the return to European football is huge for Freiburg's bank account, don’t expect this team to make major changes. The goal remains the same:

Do not get relegated.
