By Peter Weis   @PeterVicey

According to Florian Plettenberg, the transfer of former Hertha BSC and VfL Wolfsburg defender John Anthony Brooks to RCD Mallorca has fallen through.

The USMNT veteran thus remains available to anyone willing to sign him as a free-agent even after the transfer deadline passes.

Berlin native John Anthony Brooks may still end up with a Bundesliga club this season after the 29-year-old's reported transfer to RCD Mallorca fell through. This is according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany. The experienced USMNT starter was set to join his first non-Bundesliga club after a scheduled medical on Tuesday. Plettenberg did not provide any information as to why the transfer collapsed.

With an estimated market worth of €7 million, Brooks remains one of the most valuable players with extensive Bundesliga experience still available to German clubs on a free. The center back's expiring contract with VfL Wolfsburg was not renewed at the end of last season. The American international routinely turned in top class performances for Germany's green company team last season.

At the beginning of the transfer period, there had been some talk linking the central defender with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
