Reports: Bayern still seek quid-pro-quo for Flick
Installing Hansi Flick as the next Bundestrainer looks to be a knotty task that will involve some creative legal wrangling.
As Germany's FA actively courts current Bayern trainer Hansi Flick to be Joachim Löw's successor, the big question on the minds of many football enthusiasts in the Bundesrepublik remains just what Bayern will demand for the coach it hastily arranged a contract dissolution for.
In what looks to be a long, drawn-out game of poker, the FCB still holds the best cards. Germany's Sport Bild reports that Bayern arranged for Flick's contract to be prematurely terminated, but legally preclude the 56-year-old from taking another job until the 2022 calendar year commences.
In this way, the Bavarian "Super Club" set itself up to receive compensation from the DFB should it wish to install Flick prior to next January. With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar just around the corner, German national team executives will surely want to pay extra money to get Flick on the job before then.
And yet, while the DFB could ostensibly afford this, such a payment would set a dangerous precedent. As association Vice President Dr. Rainer Koch pointed out, the association cannot afford to signal to clubs that it's prepared to buy up head coaches.
"The DFB will not pay transfer fees because it has never paid transfer fees," Dr. Koch explained to Bayrische Rundfunk Radio on Wednesday, "Incidentally, for a non-profit organization, it's difficult to do so."
While Bayern will certainly not wish to appear as if they are impeding a national institution, some sort of compensation must be attained in order to cover the record outlay spent to obtain Julian Nagelsmann.
On Sunday, Germany's "Abendszeitung" reported that one idea would be an exhibition match between Bayern and the National Team would be scheduled at a date when the FCB can fill the Allianz Arena and upsell broadcasting rights. This could generate a few million Euros for the Bavarians.
