40-year-old Manuel Neuer was one of Bayern Munich’s standout performers as the Bavarians secured a 2-1 first-leg win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in their Champions League quarter-final game on Tuesday night.

The veteran goalkeeper made nine saves, including some impressive reflex stops to deny efforts from Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé.

He also came off his line superbly in a one-on-one with Vinícius, forcing the Brazilian attacker to shoot wide from a tight angle.

UEFA’s Technical Observer Group explained their decision to award Neuer the Player of the Match award as follows:

“He showed great composure in key moments, making very important saves and showing outstanding ability in one-on-one situations.”
