Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is pleased to take a 2-1 win over Real Madrid back to Germany, but he knows the Champions League quarter-final tie is far from over.
“The feeling is okay; we did something positive to try to get into the next round. It feels like half-time. There haven’t been too many big celebrations, it’s been quite contained,” Kompany told Viaplay after the game.
Bayern went 2-0 up through goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane, but they couldn’t keep Real from pulling one back via Kylian Mbappé.
“I wouldn’t say we let them back into the game, although we had some chances that we didn’t finish. They have so much quality and are always able to create something. We have to try to win the next game at the Allianz as well,” he said.
Explaining how Bayern managed to beat Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, Kompany said:
“You need quality, that’s the first thing. Of course you need spirit and mentality too, but against a team as good as this, you need quality players. Our best players are performing right now, and that gives us a chance. We have to perform again next week.”
The return leg takes place at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday at 21:00 CET.
