Having played nine times for Italy, Vincenzo Grifo has never played in the Serie A.

Instead, the 32-year-old Freiburg winger has spent his entire career in Germany, where he was born.

Yet, as Grifo revealed in a recent interview with Gianluca Di Marzio, a move to Italy was a real possibility earlier in his career.

“I feel fantastic here, and the club knows I’m always ready to help and pass our philosophy to the younger players. But yes, offers came from Italy, especially during my years with the national team. I think of Sampdoria, but also Lazio and Fiorentina: when clubs that important call, you have to consider it,” Grifo said.

He added that a switch to a Serie A club could potentially still happen.

“In the end, with my family, we’ve always chosen to stay here, where we feel good and I’m guaranteed to be a key player. But I’m not closing the door to Italy: Freiburg will always be my home, even if one day I get in the car to go to Serie A,” he explained.
