Hamburg are looking to strengthen over the winter break, with Merlin Polzin's side sitting 13th - four points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

According to Kicker, Southampton forward Damion Downs is among the names being considered. The 21-year-old joined the English club from FC Köln over the summer in an €8 million move, but he could now be allowed to leave on loan.

The USA international was born in Werneck and came through the Köln ranks before making his Bundesliga debut as Effzeh were relegated during the 2023/24 season.

In the 2. Bundesliga, he would score 10 times as Köln were promoted back to the top flight alongside HSV.

He is yet to take off for Southampton, though, with the forward failing to score across 11 Championship appearances, though he has accumulated just 275 minutes of playing time.

A recent injury to Yussuf Poulsen has left HSV lacking depth in the final third, and Downs has emerged as a target to aid Polzin's side on their quest for survival.
