VfB Stuttgart extended their lead within the top four ahead of the crunch time of the season to five points in the Champions League race against Wolfsburg on Sunday 1st in the Bundesliga.
Deniz Undav and Jamie Leweling cemented their claim for a spot in Julian Nagelsmann's Germany team in June for the 2026 World Cup thanks to key contributions.
Below is the detailed report:
Match report
Stuttgart started the game off the better side in the tie, despite some players with tired legs from the battle against Celtic in midweek.
Jamie Leweling was notably making some smart runs and getting involved on the ball to cause a weak Wolfsburg some problems.
Chris Führich forced a save from Wolfsburg keeper Grabara with a parry that the keeper comfortably dealt with.
Undav breaks deadlock
Stuttgart's Deniz Undav broke the deadlock in the 21st minute with his 14th goal of the Bundesliga season, now putting himself as the league's second top scorer.
His poacher's finish after a Wolfsburg mistake has given Nagelsmann little to think about to bring him with the squad for the opening game in Houston in the United States.
This goal marked a record 50 Wolfsburg have conceded at this point in a season. Somehow, they still are not below Heidenheim in goals against this campaign.
Tiki-taka doubles lead
Stuttgart then shortly after in the 30th minute doubled their lead with some neat passing play for Jamie Leweling (of course) to finish with a tap-in at the far post again masterminded by the lively Führich.
This counter marks the 46th goal of the season for Stuttgart, only four behind second-top scorers Borussia Dortmund.
Triple the damage
This time it was a classic but ever-more utilised technique of a long throw which caught out VfL Wolfsburg to make it 3-0 for the hosts.
Leweling, this time with more luck via a hefty deflection, doubles his tally for the afternoon to pile the pressure on relegation-stricken Wolfsburg.
With Nagelsmann pictured at the “Klassiker” yesterday alongside DFB director Rudi Völler, Leweling will hope that the DFB-trainer is watching this performance on his TV.
Calm after the storm
The second half calmed down a lot, with Stuttgart easing off some pressure but Wolfsburg's triple change at the break threw a lot of caution into the wind with attackers Mohamed Amoura and Adam Daghim both being pulled as a part of this.
Wolfsburg did manage to test multiple-Bayern loanee Alex Nübel in the second half with the substituted Shiogai providing a rare save in the tie from the now-Stuttgart veteran.
Rayan Cherki in disguise?
Bilal El khannouss tricked in a rabona cross in the last 30 minutes of the tie in an ode to Rayan Cherki's assist of the season contender for Manchester City in the Premier League in December.
However, it was Wolfsburg's Grabara who stopped this miraculous attempt of an assist.
Double defensive change for hosts
Stuttgart brought on Nartey and Assignon in the 77th minute for defensive changes to stable the ship and bring in some comfortability in holding onto a quite large lead.
Thanks to a booking in the last ten minutes, El Khannouss will now miss the next game against Mainz and departed the field in the 88th minute as a result.
Hefty added time chunk
Stuttgart are fortunate that they can even extended their lead more and make this affair a cricket-score.
Six minutes have been added on for the home side and they look to make it one of their biggest wins of the season.
There it is!
Nicolas Nartey put the dagger into Wolfsburg's day firmly cementing them in the bottom two and causing chaos within the club.
His goal from open play with eleven metres distance means it is now Stuttgart's joint-biggest victory this season in the Bundesliga.
A Tomás assist meant Nartey grabbed a goal to complete a stellar victory, despite coming on to support the defence.
The game ended shortly after with 4-0.
