There was emotion, controversy and a touch of romance at the Volksparkstadion as Hamburger SV defeated SC Freiburg 3-2 in an entertaining Bundesliga encounter. Bakery Jatta opened the scoring with his first-ever Bundesliga goal before Luka Vušković’s fortunate free-kick and Fabio Baldé’s late strike secured all three points for the hosts. A double from former St. Pauli striker Igor Matanović was not enough for the guests on the day.

Match report: HSV vs. SC Freiburg

The hosts started brightly and found their breakthrough after 14 (already very entertaining) minutes. Albert Grønbæk drove forward down the left flank before delivering a dangerous ball into the middle, where Bakery Jatta was perfectly positioned to tap home from close range. The goal marked Jatta’s first-ever Bundesliga strike and sparked huge celebrations among the home supporters.

HSV’s joy, however, lasted only briefly. Freiburg responded almost immediately, knowing that victory would secure seventh place and another season of European football. In the 16th minute, the visitors hit Hamburg on the counterattack as Lukas Kübler drilled a low cross into the penalty area for Igor Matanović, who calmly converted to make it 1-1.

Matanović then added further spice to the match with a provocative celebration in front of the HSV supporters, a gesture linked to his history with Hamburg’s fierce city rivals, St. Pauli.

The remainder of the first half continued at an entertaining pace, with both sides creating chances in an open contest. HSV came close to restoring their lead when Fabio Vieira unleashed a powerful long-range effort that crashed against the post, while Freiburg remained dangerous on the break. Nevertheless, the teams went into halftime level at 1-1.

After the interval, the tempo dropped noticeably as both sides struggled to rediscover the intensity of the first half. The game appeared to be drifting until HSV found a fortunate breakthrough in the 64th minute.

Awarded a free-kick around 30 yards from goal, Luka Vušković stepped up despite the distance seeming too great to pose serious danger. The Croatian defender struck the effort directly into the wall, but the deflection completely wrong-footed Noah Atubolu and sent the ball rolling into the net to restore Hamburg’s lead.

The goal felt like a fitting farewell moment for Vušković, who was likely playing his final home match for HSV following a hugely successful loan spell. The talented Croatian has attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and his next destination promises to be one of the major talking points of the summer.

HSV quickly built on their momentum. Just three minutes later, substitute Fabio Baldé finished off a swift counterattack with composure to make it 3-1 and effectively seal the victory for the hosts.

Freiburg were unable to recover from the quickfire double blow, as HSV comfortably saw out the closing stages to cap an impressive evening in front of their home crowd.

Freiburg regained some hopes for a draw or more when Matanović scored his second of the match via header after a corner in the 87th minute, but there were no more dangerous attacks by the guests after that.

The hosts were the ones to almost get another goal instead, when Vieira hit the post once more and Nicolai Remberg scored from the rebound - but he was offside beforehand.

Who would‘ve thought the promoted team would beat the Europa League finalists, eh?

Final result: HSV 3-2 SC Freiburg.
