Augsburg determined to extend Vargas' contract after failed summer transfer

A summer transfer ultimately didn't materialize for Ruben Vargas, and Augsburg now want to extend his contract.

For a long time, it looked like Ruben Vargas would be leaving FC Augsburg during the summer transfer window.

However, despite interest from Stade Rennes, Fiorentina and Galatasaray, a move for the Swiss attacking midfielder never materialized.

With Vargas' contract set to expire at the end of the season, Augsburg are now determined to tie him down to a new deal to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

After Augsburg's 3-1 win over St. Pauli, in which Vargas started, sporting director Marinko Jurendic confirmed to Kicker that he wants to open talks with the 26-year-old soon.

"The player should see that the club has invested a lot in him," Jurendic told Kicker, putting pressure on Vargas to sign a new contract.

Vargas joined Augsburg from FC Luzern in 2019.
