In the aftermath of Austria's 5-1 win over Ghana last Friday in which Borussia Dortmund's Carney Chukwuemeka made his debut, Ralf Rangnick took aim at the Westphalian club.
The Austrian head coach said he was somewhat surprised by Chukwuemeka's apparent lack of German, before inadvertently attributing the blame on Dortmund.
"I know things differently from my time in Leipzig or Hoffenheim," Rangnick explained, clarifying how he was used to it from previous Bundesliga clubs:
“There, attending German lessons three times a week was mandatory. If someone didn't show up, it was as if they had missed training without an excuse," he said after the game.
The 67-year-old believes the responsibility clearly lies with the club. He then argued that it is crucial to actively support players who grew up abroad in learning the language.
Chukwuemeka, born in Vienna but raised in England, recently struggled with his German skills in interviews. Some of the conversations were then continued in English.
