After agreeing personal terms with Nick Woltemade over the summer, Bayern Munich ultimately pulled out of negotiations with his club at the time, VfB Stuttgart, as they were unwilling to meet the asking price.

Bayern supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has now confirmed that he was one of the critical voices.

"I said: we’re entering figures that I no longer find acceptable," he told Bayerischer Rundfunk.

"We shouldn’t meet all their demands."

In the end, Woltemade moved to Newcastle United instead for a fee that has since been confirmed at €75 million.

According to Rummenigge, the Premier League club were unwise to pay such a sum for the striker.

"I can only congratulate those in Stuttgart for finding let me put it in quotes an 'idiot’ who paid that much money, because we certainly wouldn’t have done that in Munich," he stated bluntly.
