Germany or USA? Augsburg's Banks conflicted

Noahkai Banks was one of the key figures in Augsburg’s 2-0 victory over Köln and after the final whistle, the defender analysed both the flow of the game and the club’s current momentum.
“We started the game well, but then we were pushed back,” Banks admitted. “The goal opened the game up for us. After that, we were able to defend well and manage it. Sometimes you need a goal like that.”
Indeed, the breakthrough shifted the dynamic of the contest. Augsburg were able to sit deeper, stay compact and rely on their defensive structure - an area that has noticeably improved in recent weeks.
Banks also reacted to praise from teammate Keven Schlotterbeck, who had spoken positively about the young defender’s development.
“Praise from Schlotti is always good,” Banks said with a smile. “He’s usually very critical, so I’m happy to take that compliment.”
Credit to Wagner and Baum
When asked about Augsburg’s strong run of form, Banks pointed to continuity rather than revolution.
“I’m not entirely sure why we’re better now,” he explained. “The foundations were already laid by Sandro Wagner. He was a super cool coach. Now under Manuel Baum it’s going really well, and of course we’re happy about that.”
A difficult international decision
Beyond club football, Banks also addressed speculation about his international future. Eligible for more than one national team, the defender revealed that no final decision has been made.
“It’s a difficult decision regarding my nationality. I’m very torn,” he said. “I’m in contact with both the USA and Germany and both national coaches.” Banks emphasised that he does not want to rush the choice.
“I hopefully have a long career ahead of me, so I want to think carefully and speak with my family. I don’t want to make it dependent on a World Cup. I’m just happy to be in this position and to be able to make this decision. We’ll see what happens.”
For now, however, Banks’ focus remains firmly on Augsburg, where both his performances and his importance to the team continue to grow.
