Doll - a former coach of Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund - will replace André Breitenreiter, who was sacked earlier today, and has signed a contract until 2020.
Most recently, Doll coached Hungarian side Ferencváros from 2013 to 2018.
"Thomas Doll has done well in all of his previous jobs, and he has proven time and time again that he is capable of reaching predetermined goals - both in the struggle for survival and in pursuit of titles and international business," Hannover sporting director Horst Heldt said, as quoted on the club's website.
"Even during his years in Hungary, he always kept a close eye on German football. He knows the Bundesliga inside out," he added.
Doll will begin his tenure as Hannover coach with a match against RB Leipzig on Friday.
