Bayer Leverkusen star Alejandro Grimaldo has revealed that he dreams of playing in the Spanish La Liga in the future.

Grimaldo, a former Barcelona youth product, never made his senior debut in Spain before joining Portuguese side Benfica in 2016. And at the age of 28, he still hopes to play in his home country at some point.

"I still have a lot of years ahead of me and I don't know what the future holds," Grimaldo, who joined Leverkusen on a free transfer from Benfica last summer, told Okdiario at the Spanish national team camp.

"But yes, I would like to play in Spain in the future because it's a league I've always said I want to play in, to play at home, but at the moment I'm very happy in Leverkusen. I am enjoying these months. I've only been here for a short time and I want to enjoy it even more," he added.

In the interview, he also spoke highly of Real Madrid.

"It is one of the best teams in the world, if not the best, and it is a team that every player wants to go to, but at the moment I am at Leverkusen. I've been here for three months and everything is going well. We have to keep working and we'll see what happens in the future," said Grimaldo.

The 28-year-old left-back went on to say that he understands why Barcelona haven't shown an interest in bringing him back.

"At the end of the day, they have the position covered, they have very good players and teams are looking for positions that they have less covered. I understand that perfectly. I went to Leverkusen and I am very happy there, I am enjoying an incredible moment and we must continue."

Grimaldo has hit the ground running in Leverkusen, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in 17 appearances for the Werkself.
