Bayern held to a draw in Bundesliga opener

By Rune Gjerulff

Bayern München were held to a draw by Hertha BSC as the 2019/20 Bundesliga season was kicked off at Allianz Arena.

Reigning German champions Bayern München were trailing at the break against Hertha BSC, but came back to get a 2-2 draw as the 2019/20 Bundesliga season began at Allianz Arena on Friday evening.

It all seemed to go according to plan for Bayern when Robert Lewandowski sent the home side ahead midway through the first half after Serge Gnabry found the Polish hitman with a clever pass across goal.

But out of nothing, Hertha responded with two quick goals to grab the lead at half-time. With 36 minutes on the clock, a shot from Hertha newcomer Dodi Lukebakio hit Vedad Ibisevic and went into the net.

A few minutes later, Marko Grujic made it 2-1 after the Liverpool loanee was played in behind by Vedad Ibsevic following a head-to-head collision with Benjamin Pavard. The French international wasn't able to keep up with Grujic who took the ball round Manuel Neuer before sending it into the empty net.

Lewandowski got one back for Bayern when he sent the ball past Hertha's Rune Jarstein from the penalty spot after an hour. The Bavarians were awarded the penalty following a VAR review after Lewandowski was dragged to the ground by Marko Grujic.

Bayern desperately searched for a winner in the remaining 30 minutes, but Hertha defended well and managed to shut the Bavarians out in the last part of the game.
