1. FC Nürnberg found a replacement for their captain Fabio Gruber, who has joined Mainz today, with the signing of the 21-year-old Greek center-back Alexios Kalogeropoulos. The 1.87-meter defender arrived after the end of his contract with Greek champions Olympiakos Praeus.

Kalogeropoulos has only featured 17 times for the first team of Olympiacos, but he’s the captain of Greece U21. Greece beat Germany in Jena at the start of the ongoing U21 European Championship qualifiers.

“We have been watching Alexios for a little while. He is still a young, developmental centre-back, but still has a lot of experience and has convinced us through his header and duel strength as well as his calm on the ball.” said FCN’s board member Joti Chatzialexiou.

“I’m looking forward to my time at 1. FC Nürnberg. The past has shown that young players can develop well here and mature into seasoned professionals. I’m looking forward to my first experiences abroad.” said Kalogeropoulos in his first interview as a Nürnberg player.
