Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed Carles Martínez Novell as their new head coach.

The 42-year-old Spaniard has signed a two-year contract and replaces Kasper Hjulmand, who leaves the position after one season.

Martínez joins Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer after three years with French side Toulouse.

Bayer Leverkusen chairman of the shareholders’ committee Werner Wenning commented:

“First of all, we would like to thank Kasper Hjulmand for his work and commitment over the past season. Reaching the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal and the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League set important milestones, even if the sporting objectives were not fully achieved. We wish him all the best for the future. At the same time, we are delighted to have secured Carles Martínez, an ambitious and modern football coach for Bayer 04.”

Managing director for sport Simon Rolfes added:

“We have thoroughly considered which coach best fits the next stage of Bayer 04’s development. Carles Martínez has successfully developed numerous young players in Toulouse and turned an internationally diverse squad into a strong unit. He also brings valuable experience from his time in FC Barcelona’s youth academy.

“Carles is a coach with clear principles and a modern playing philosophy. We are convinced he can provide the right impulses for our sporting future.”
