The 26-year-old returns to German football two-and-a-half years after Borussia Dortmund sold him to the Portuguese heavyweights. By all accounts, Weigl has been able to resurrect his career, raiding his estimated market value to €22 million and making a triumphant return to the German national team.
The central midfielder, who's career had been derailed because off injuries, is now the most expensive player on the Gladbach roster. He'll certainly be hoping to make a splash quickly and perhaps make a play for Hansi Flick's World Cup squad.
"Julian is incredibly strong on the ball," BMG sporting director Roland Virkus said of the six-times capped senior international at the unveiling, "He brings a lot of Bundesliga experience and footballing quality and will definitely be able to help our team quickly."
