VfL Wolfsburg forward Lukas Nmecha looked to be in contention for a spot in Germany's World Cup squad until he suffered an injury last night.

The 23-year-old striker sustained a knee injury in Wolfsburg's 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, which will keep him out of action for a number a weeks. Therefore, he will not be able to feature at the World Cup.

"It is a pity that Lukas will miss the last competitive match this year and that he will not be able to play at the World Cup in Qatar either. We wish him a quick and smooth healing process," said Wolfsburg managing director Jörg Schmadtke.

Nmecha has featured seven times for Germany.
