Heidel on exit clauses: "I find it strange when a coach commits to build something and then demands an exit clause"

With so many coaches on the move in the Bundesrepublik, much of the talk in German footballing circles centers around a trainer's "exit clause".

Some weeks back, Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl commented that he couldn't have pried Marco Rose away from RB Salzburg in the first place without one. Presumably, his new head-coach Adi Hütter has one as well.

Newly reinstalled FSV Mainz 05 sporting CEO Christian Heidel holds a different opinion when it comes to head-coaches.

Having achieved a remarkable turnaround in his first three and a half months on the job, one wonders how long it will take for Bo Svensson's name to pop up in the speculative circles of larger Bundesliga clubs. Though Svensson hasn't officially helped Mainz avoid the drop, the remarkable haul of 22 points in 14 rounds under the Danish trainer's watch surely has him on more than a few short lists.

"Bo is totally authentic," club chief exec Christian Heidel remarked today in his latest round of praise for his hand-picked head-coach, "he got inside the players' head from day one. It's working out just as I imagined, but that's not surprising as I've known [Bo] for many years."

Asked about Svensson's current contract, Heidel confirmed what journalists at German footballing magazine Kicker reported late last month. Namely, that the Nullfünfter gaffer does not have an exit clause in his contract.

"I find it strange when a coach commits to building something and at the same time demands an exit clause," Heidel said, "I've never signed one."

Ironically enough, Svensson himself departed Mainz for FC Liefering on an exit clause in 2019, then returned to the Pfalz on a separate one this January.

Long-time Mainz administrator was not at the club when Svensson got his youth team contract. Heidel, who returned from a stint with Schalke to once again work at Mainz in December, confirmed that an exit clause wasn't even brought up when he structured Svensson's current contract.
