Lewandowski equals goal-scoring record in Bayern draw with Freiburg

Robert Lewandowski matched Gerd Müller's Bundesliga goal-scoring record when he opened the scoring in Bayern München's 2-2 draw with Freiburg.
Robert Lewandowski equaled Gerd Müller's record for most goals in a Bundesliga season as Bayern München drew 2-2 with SC Freiburg at Schwarzwald-Stadion on Saturday.

The prolific Bayern forward fired home from the penalty spot in the 26th minute to take his league goal tally to 40 for the season – the same amount of goals that Müller scored in the 1971/72 campaign.

A few minutes later, Manuel Gulde found the equaliser from a corner, heading home Vincenzo Grifo's cross.

Bayern thought they had restored the lead in the 53rd minute when Leroy Sané skipped past three opponents before setting up Gnabry at the back post, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

One minute later, Sané had the ball in the net himself – and this time, it counted. The 25-year-old winger scored at the back post after a cushioned pass from Thomas Müller.

But Freiburg weren't finished and leveled the score in the 82nd minute when Christian Günter smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Elsewhere, Augsburg secured three important points with a 2-0 victory over fellow relegation rivals Werder Bremen in a game that saw both teams have a player sent off.

Meanwhile, today's other relegation six-pointer between Hertha BSC and FC Köln ended in a goalless draw.

FC Köln sit 17th, one point behind 16th-placed Werder Bremen and two points behind 15th-placed Arminia Bielefeld.

Augsburg and Hertha, who are 12th and 14th respectively, can no longer be relegated this season.

In Gelsenkirchen, already-relegated Schalke 04 sensationally beat fifth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3, meaning that Borussia Dortmund can secure Champions League football next season with a win over Mainz tomorrow.
