Frederik Rönnow wins the “Union Footballer of the Year” award for the third season running. The goalkeeper played a big part as Union Berlin secured their league status for another year after a difficult start to the campaign.

In the process, the Dane equalled the record set by Jan Glinker (2007-2009) with three successive triumphs in an award voted by the fans. According to Union Berlin’s official website, Rönnow got 3,221 votes (48.5%), while Christopher Trimmel and Danilho Doekhi finished on the podium.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper will receive the award on Saturday before their opening Bundesliga fixture against VfB Stuttgart. The event started in 1980, but this is the first time they have elected the best player from the women’s team. Lisa Heiseler is the inaugural winner as Union Berlin secured a first-ever promotion to the Frauen-Bundesliga.
