Leroy Sané returned to Germany’s starting XI in their 2-1 friendly win over the United States on Saturday, stepping in for Bayern Munich prodigy Lennart Karl, who was forced to withdraw from the squad on Friday after suffering an injury in training.

After scoring the winner in Chicago against the co-hosts, Sané praised the togetherness within the squad, saying he feels a strong sense of excitement heading into the World Cup.

“We get along very well as a team and there is a great sense of excitement for the World Cup, which you can also see in our togetherness on the pitch,” Sané told RTL.

“For me, the most important thing is that we function as a team and go into matches together, not individual matters.

“Of course it hurts when a young player like Lennart Karl misses out on his dream, but we stand together as a team and now want to go on the attack.”

Sané could find himself in the starting lineup again when Germany face Curaçao in their World Cup opener on June 14.
