Werner congratulates Kiel on promotion: "A lot of good people work there."

SV Werder Bremen trainer Ole Werner - speaking at his own Thursday pre-match presser - congratulated all his former friends and colleagues at Holstein Kiel after the "Storks" finally managed to achieve promotion to Germany's top footballing flight last weekend.

Werner got a good laugh out of members of the assembled press corps when mentioning how the club he played and coached often played second fiddle to handball in the capital of Schleswig-Holstein.

Having failed to help his youth academy club achieve promotion himself during the 2020/21 promotion-relegation playoffs, SV Werder Bremen trainer Ole Werner was quick to congratulate the club he exclusively spent his professional and coaching career with after Holstein Kiel earned Bundesliga promotion last weekend. Speaking at his Thursday presser, Werner admitted that he "slept very little" after Kiel's promotion last Saturday night.

"I'm incredibly happy for the club and am looking forward to experiencing a first division atmosphere at Holstein Stadium," Werner said, "Sometimes one has trouble sleeping due to euphoria. That was the case with me."

"There are a lot of very good people who work there," Werner continued, "It wasn't that long ago that the club was in the fourth division. The club was overshadowed by the handball club and was more or less the laughingstock of the city."
