Under new coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich have made a strong start to the new Bundesliga season and sit firmly at the top of the table, five points clear of second-placed RB Leipzig.

In fact, honorary president and supervisory board member Uli Hoeness is so impressed with what he's seen from the team that he's already convinced that Bayern will win the league.

Speaking at a forum organized by the German newspaper Finanz und Wirtschaft on Thursday evening, Hoeness said:

“What I can promise is the German championship. We are in a wonderful position at the moment.”

The 72-year-old notably left out Borussia Dortmund when naming Bayern's rivals for the title.

“We are top of the table. And our only real rivals, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, are far behind us.”

Hoeness took a dig at former coach Thomas Tuchel between the lines when praising Kompany's work.

“It's like night and day compared to before. He is communicative and looks after his players. But we didn't know that before. That's why we called Pep Guardiola and asked him for advice. He just told us we could take him blindly and that he could do it.”

Bayern won the Bundesliga for 11 years in a row before Bayer Leverkusen ended their run last season.
