Bayer Leverkusen confirmed on Monday that Florian Wirtz will be out of action for a number of weeks after suffering an ankle ligament injury in his side's 0-2 defeat at Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has expressed his sympathy for the 21-year-old following the announcement.

"I am very sorry for ‘Flo’. There are big games coming up, both at club level and with the national team, which he will miss and in which Bayer and we will miss him very much," Nagelsmann told SID.

“The most important thing now is his health. All of us in the national team wish him a speedy recovery.”

The injury will keep Wirtz out of Bayer Leverkusen's upcoming games, including Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second leg against Bayern Munich.

Wirtz was already ruled out of Germany's UEFA Nations League quarter-final first leg against Italy on 20 March due to suspension, but the injury will prevent him from playing in the return leg three days later.
