Florian Wirtz will be out of action for several weeks after sustaining an injury in Saturday's 0-2 defeat to Werder Bremen, Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed.

A post-match MRI scan revealed that Wirtz has suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle.

"The loss of Florian obviously hits us hard in this phase of the season but we will compensate for him with a strong squad," said Bayer 04 managing director for sport Simon Rolfes.

"We know Florian and also know he will come back as soon as possible. Everybody will support him in that. We are assuming he will be fully fit again for the end of the season run-in."

Wirtz has scored 15 goals and provided 15 assists in 39 games for Die Werkself this season.
