FC Augsburg have confirmed that Arne Maier has joined Hungarian top-flight side Újpest FC.

The 27-year-old midfielder makes a permanent move to Újpest, where former Hertha Berlin coach Pál Dárdai serves as head of football, six months before his contract with Augsburg was set to expire.

“After open discussions, we have reached an agreement. Arne had already expressed a desire to explore new sporting perspectives and we have found a solution which suits all parties. We thank Arne for his time at the club and wish him all the best for the future”, said Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber.

Maier made 110 appearances for Augsburg, scoring 10 goals and providing 14 assists.

“My time in Augsburg was a really formative stage of my career," the midfielder said.

“I was supported well from the off and got to experience some special moments with these fans, which I will never forget. I am so grateful for these memories and experiences and wish the club all the best for the future.”
