Official: Müller announces retirement from international football

Thomas Muller has officially confirmed his retirement from international duty.

Last week, it was reported that Thomas Muller had decided to retire from international football.

Now, the 34-year-old Bayern Munich veteran has confirmed it himself by posting a video on YouTube.

"When I was given the chance to play my first international game over 14 years ago, I never dreamed this would happen. After 131 international matches and 45 goals, I'm saying goodbye to the German eagle today," Muller said in the video.

The 34-year-old added that he had experienced "great victories and bitter defeats" with the national team.

“Sometimes I was devastated, only to get up again - in competition with the best players in the world and alongside fantastic teammates with whom I shared many unforgettable moments,” he said.

“I have always been proud to represent my country. I want to thank you all. Now, I'll be a fan in the stands. So long!"

Müller made his debut for Germany in 2010 and went to make 131 appearances for the national team, scoring 45 goals and providing 41 assists.

The 34-year-old is Germany's third-most-capped player, behind only Miroslav Klose (137 caps) and Lothar Matthaus (150 caps).

He was the top scorer at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with five goals and lifted the trophy with Germany four years later in Brazil.

The forward will continue his club career with Bayern Munich, where he is under contract until 2025.
