The decision comes during a difficult sporting period for Wolfsburg, who are enduring one of their most disappointing Bundesliga campaigns to date and remain in a relegation battle. However, off the pitch, the club have offered supporters a symbolic lift by reinstating a modern version of the much-loved historic crest, which will already feature on the team’s kits for the clash with Bayern.
“VfL Wolfsburg looks back on more than 80 years of history. The crenellated crest has been a central element from the very beginning. The crenellations foster identification and embody tradition,” explains Supervisory Board Chairman Sebastian Rudolph. “We deliberately took our time with this decision and made it together. Within a network that unites all sports and brings all people together. The crenellated crest is a defining element of our club culture.”
The move, long advocated for by sections of the active supporter base, will now be implemented step by step across all areas of the club. Wolfsburg say the transition marks the beginning of a broader cultural shift in how the club presents its identity.
“The cooperation over the past few months has been intensive, but above all, based on great trust. A new spirit of collaboration has developed between the club, fans, and governing bodies, which is now also reflected in the crenellated crest,” reports fan representative and VfL capo Marvin Minner.
