Xabi Alonso on lifting the Bundesliga trophy with Leverkusen: "We'll never forget this day"

Xabi Alonso has shared his emotional thoughts on lifting the Bundesliga trophy with Bayer Leverkusen.

After clinching their first Bundesliga title over a month ago, Bayer Leverkusen finally lifted the trophy on Saturday.

The celebrations could be unleashed after a 2-1 win over Augsburg ensured Leverkusen finished on 90 points and remained unbeaten in the league an achievement that head coach Xabi Alonso is understandably proud of.

“We will never forget this day. It is totally deserved. In the end we are undefeated. That was a clear goal for us. After the game against Bremen we knew that we could achieve great things. I'm really proud of the team," Xabi Alonso said at the post-match press conference.

“The fans can celebrate today. We'll enjoy it and then recover tomorrow. It's an important day for the club and it's totally deserved to become champions undefeated. Unbelievable! We'll need some time to let that sink in.

"To reach 90 points is extremely strong. The record is 91, we just missed that, but to remain undefeated is extraordinary. This achievement is outstanding, not only in Germany but also in Europe.

"Our team has written itself into Bundesliga history. In 20 years we will look back and all be able to say: ‘Wow, we were there’," Alonso said.

Now that the Bundesliga is over, Xabi and Leverkusen can turn their attention to winning the Europa League and the DFB-Pokal, with the finals against Atalanta and Kaiserslautern coming up next week.

“From tomorrow we have our next big goals in sight. The next week is unique with these opportunities,” said Xabi Alonso.
