Werder Bremen have been rocked by a major injury setback in their preparations for the 2025/26 campaign.

The Bundesliga club confirmed on Wednesday evening that Mitchell Weiser has suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The injury, which occurred during training on Wednesday afternoon, is expected to sideline Weiser for several months.

“This news is very painful for all of us," said Werder head coach Horst Steffen.

"It’s a blow for us both personally and from a sporting perspective. I feel incredibly sorry for ‘Mitch’.

“As a team and as a club, we will do everything we can to help him recover as quickly as possible and return to the squad.”

Weiser, 31, has been a key performer for Werder for years. Last season, he scored five goals and provided nine assists in the Bundesliga.
