Report: Schalke weigh offer for Mollet

North-Rhine Westphalia's "Westdeutscher Allgemeine Zeitung" reports that last-placed FC Schalke 04 are considering selling French attacking midfielder Florent Mollet in order to free up some cash.

Some seven short months after his arrival, French veteran Florent Mollet may be headed back across the border to France. NRW's "Westdeutscher Allgemeine Zeitung" reports that Bundesliga side FC Schalke are presently weighing an offer from FC Nantes for the attacking midfielder.

The 31-year-old has spent his entire professional career in his native France. Mollet had been working his way into the Schalke starting XI, making four out of a possible six starts in the final weeks of league play. He registered a goal off the bench during matchday 11's 1-2 loss to Hertha BSC.

The Königsblauen certainly wouldn't want to part company with Mollet for any less than the €500,000 they paid for him last summer. A potential sale likely wouldn't be an issue at all if an injury to striker Sebastian Polter and the apparent collapse of a loan-deal for Union Berlin's Tim Skarke didn't leave the team in desperate need of more attacking assistance.

In theory, Schalke have some financial wiggle room after the activation of Amine Harit's purchase clause this past autumn. In practice, the cash-strapped club remains in debt to the tune of (most reliable German sources such as Kicker magazine agree) some €150-200 million post-pandemic.

A suitable offer likely won't be refused.
