Van Bommel eyes score of Dutch talents as he prepares to take charge of Wolfsburg
With Oliver Glasner set for Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg are yet to announce their new head coach for the 2021/22 season. The club have all to play for domestically in Germany and on the continental stage in the UEFA Champions League, where they will appear after a six year break.
Former Dutch midfield general Mark Van Bommel is expected to be announced soon as Wolfsburg’s new manager, for the upcoming season.
According to reports from Goal.com, the ex-PSV Eindhoven manager is already shortlisting his next moves in the transfer market to bolster his new team.
Wout Weghorst has been continuously linked with a move away from the Volkswagen Arena. Liverpool & West Ham United are also reportedly contenders for his signature.
Amid such talk, Van Bommel is planning to reinforce his attack with some top talents from his home country, in the Eredivisie.
Dortmund-linked Donyell Malen and Mohammed Ihattaren of PSV are said to top Bommel’s wishlist. He worked with both the youngsters during his time as the Dutch club’s head coach between June 2018 & December 2019.
While 22-year-old Malen is more of a centre-forward capable of operating as a box striker, 19-year-old Ihattaren is an electric and pacy winger capable of doing damage from the wings.
AZ Alkmaar striker Myron Boadu and TSG Hoffenheim’s Dutch centre-back Melayro Bogarde are also being linked with a move to Wolfsburg.
Replacing prolific Weghorst will be the number one priority if Wolfsburg are to contend for trophies next season.
This certainly will not come easy. The Dutch marksman has scored 20+ goals in each of his last two seasons for Die Wolfe, most recently finishing the 2020/21 Bundesliga season with 20 strikes and 25 overall across all competitions.
