Deniz Undav: "Tonight, there’ll be a frustration döner"

VfB Stuttgart forward Deniz Undav admitted Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final defeat to FC Bayern Munich was painful, but stressed that Stuttgart still have every reason to be proud after ending the season with a trip to Berlin.

Deniz Undav spoke of mixed emotions after Stuttgart’s 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal final, with the striker disappointed by the result but encouraged by his side’s overall season.

“It does hurt having to watch Bayern celebrate now. But despite that, the positive feelings outweigh everything because of the way we finished the season. Today we simply played against the best German team.”

Stuttgart matched Bayern for long spells of the game but ultimately lacked precision in key attacking moments, according to Undav.

“A lot of little things didn’t work for us today - the final pass, the right timing with the pass.”

The Germany international also addressed speculation surrounding his future and confirmed he is still waiting for clarity over a possible contract extension.

“I have to wait for the contract offer. I have to leave on Wednesday for the national team, so we’ll see what happens before then.”

Despite the disappointment of losing the final, Undav kept his sense of humour when discussing Stuttgart’s plans for the evening.

“Tonight there’ll be a frustration döner and we’ll have a frustration celebration. As I said, we can be proud of our season — next year we want to be back here and win.”
