Taiwo Awoniyi is linked once again with a Bundesliga switch as the Nigerian striker struggled for minutes at Nottingham Forest. The 28-year-old was rumored to join Werder Bremen in the past, and one of his old clubs is now interested in arranging another loan move.

Awoniyi spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Mainz from Liverpool. The carnival city club is doing very well in the European Conference League, but they’re languishing at the bottom of the Bundesliga as they look to add a striker to their ranks.

Kicker reported that the 05ers set their sights on their former player, hoping to reach an agreement with Nottingham Forest on a short loan deal. Awoniyi is also familiar with the current Mainz coach as he worked with Urs Fischer at Union Berlin.

He only scored one goal in 12 Bundesliga appearances for Mainz, but he had a successful spell at the capital club as he found the net 25 times in all competitions. Awoniyi was also in top form on his debut season at Forest before losing his starting berth at the Premier League club.
