Hamburger SV have been flirting with the idea of signing Fabio Vieira for a long time, despite some financial concerns regarding being able to afford his transfer fee.

However, now it's being reported that “HSV would be prepared to go through a pain threshold” to keep Vieira long-term, according to the Hamburger Abendblatt.

The Bundesliga newcomers cannot afford the €20 million purchase option negotiated with Arsenal, but they could try to discuss a lower price with the English club.

The only prerequisite is that HSV avoid relegation, which is encouraging seeing as the Portuguese star himself seems to be able to envision a future on the Elbe.

HSV board member Eric Huwe recently stated his own optimism regarding a continuation of the collaboration with 25-year-old loanee:

“The situation is relatively relaxed. Fábio feels very comfortable in Hamburg , and I don't get the impression that Arsenal is basing its long-term plans on him,” he said.
