Mainz secured their maiden home win of the season with a hard-fought three points at the expense of Heidenheim. The result means Mainz left the Bundesliga basement for their guests at the midpoint of the season.
“I’ve only been here for two games, but, of course, I noticed how long the fans had been waiting for a home win, and how much the team wanted it,” said Phillip Tietz after his Mewa Arena debut.

“I’m absolutely delighted that we managed it again after eleven months. It’s a huge weight off our shoulders. This win is primarily for the fans, who have waited so long and supported us day in and day out. That’s not something you can take for granted.”

Tietz’s only goal of the season came in Augsburg’s defeat to Heidenheim in the first half of the season. The 28-year-old striker added an assist to his name on Tuesday after his decent debut in the 2-2 draw with Union Berlin.

“My connection with my teammates is working fine. The guys looked for me more, and I was able to hold up the ball better in the second half. I’m gradually settling in. I haven’t scored yet, but I did get an assist now. Hopefully, I can reward myself with a goal against Köln. I’m feeling optimistic.”
