Hamann singles out Gündogan and Musiala for praise

After Germany's first two matches at Euro 2024, Dietmar Hamann has found special praise for Ilkay Gündogan and Jamal Musiala.

Germany have made an impressive start to Euro 2024, winning their two matches so far against Scotland (5-1) and Hungary (2-0).

One of the German players who has really shone is Ilkay Gündogan, with the captain proving his doubters wrong after receiving a lot of criticism prior to the tournament.

"Last year, I criticized the decision to keep Gündogan as captain because I didn't see a place for him in the team alongside Musiala and Wirtz. But after his performances at this European Championship, I have to say that he has absolutely earned his place and the captain's armband," Hamann wrote in his column.

“The way he leads the way and sets the tone up front is outstanding. He's been the perfect captain so far. We'll see if he still is in three weeks' time.”

But the "most outstanding" German player in the first two games has been Jamal Musiala, according to Hamann, who's pleased the 21-year-old chose to play for Germany rather than England.

“The English are missing him and can't get the best out of Phil Foden or Harry Kane. I think Musiala made the right decision and he's better off with us. He's clearly enjoying himself and I hope he continues to do so,” stated Hamann.
