Ilyas Ansah reveals why he chose Union Berlin over HSV and Gladbach

Ilyas Ansah has revealed that Steffen Baumgart was a major factor in his decision to join 1. FC Union Berlin this past summer.

During the summer, Ilyas Ansah attracted interest from 1. FC Union Berlin, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Hamburger SV.

Ultimately, the young striker chose to join Union from Paderborn, and he now reveals that the German capital club's head coach, Steffen Baumgart, playing a decisive role in his decision.

"For a young player, the coach is one of the most important figures at a club," Ansah told Sport Bild.

"He clearly explained the role I could play, that I would get the necessary time, and that I could make mistakes. He also promised me opportunities if I worked hard and delivered performances. 

"That’s exactly what you want to hear: trust. That’s why I chose Union early on, and I want to repay that trust."

The 20-year-old has hit the ground running, scoring four goals in six games since his move from Paderborn.
