After narrowly escaping relegation from the Bundesliga last season, Heidenheim were looking to begin the new season on a positive note.

However, their season opener did not go according to plan, as Frank Schmidt’s side suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Wolfsburg.

After the game, Schmidt sounded the alarm, making it clear that a significantly higher level of performance will be required going forward.

“We have to turn things around completely and very quickly,” Schmidt said, describing the defeat as “well deserved.”

He admitted he didn’t expect to be saying this after the first league game of the season, but that he had to speak the truth.

“We can’t play like this in the Bundesliga,” he added.

Schmidt emphasized that his team will need far more “energy, courage, and conviction” to get a result against RB Leipzig in their next Bundesliga match on Saturday.
