Kaiserslautern confirm Anfang as new head coach

Markus Anfang is officially the new coach of FC Kaiserslautern.

2. Bundesliga outfit 1. FC Kaiserslautern have confirmed Markus Anfang as their new head coach.

Anfang replaces 70-year-old Friedhelm Funkel, who was brought in on a short-term basis in February and helped the club stay in the 2. Bundesliga and reach the DFB-Pokal final, where they lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen.

"Markus Anfang fits the profile we were looking for: He has gained a lot of experience in both youth and men's soccer in various leagues, which will certainly help him in his job here at FCK," said FCK managing director Thomas Hengen about the appointment of the new head coach.

“In addition, we have found a coach who wants to follow the path of FCK and at the same time has very precise ideas about a proactive style of play, so we are looking forward to a constructive and hopefully successful cooperation for our club.”

Anfang, who played for Kaiserslautern in his active career, has previously coached Holstein Kiel, FC Cologne, Werder Bremen and most recently Dynamo Dresden.

Controversially, he was sacked as Werder coach in November 2021 and handed a lengthy ban after using a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate.
